Gas Holder Park
Maylim have transformed one of the iconic King's Cross gas holders into a new public realm.
Overview
We were appointed by client Argent to transform the structure into a public park with spectacular sculpted canopy and paths leading down to the canal. By day, Gas Holder Park brings natural beauty to the area, and by night subtle lighting transforms the park into a unique events destination.
The circular lawn sits inside the gas holder frame and the stainless steel canopy is supported by 150 delicate fin columns made from stainless steel with mirrored and satin finishes. The canopy roof is perforated with diamond shaped holes that bring playful light into the underside of the structure. Trees are positioned between the columns and low level planting lead down to the banks of Regent’s Canal.
Our work on the project included a new stainless steel canopy and lawn within the guide frame, surrounded by granite and feature planting; the construction of footpaths on either side of the carriageway with high-spec temporary finishes to footpaths; new road surfacing; and a mixture of yorkstone granite and clay paving intercepted with lawn and planting beds.
This unique and creative project was a source of great excitement to our team; bringing the structure to life for the local community to enjoy.
